For the Art Institute of Chicago’s Canova: Sketching in Clay exhibition, a three-film installation brought Antonio Canova’s working process into focus.
Over five months, the production documented sculptor Fred X Brownstein recreating a marble sculpture through the techniques central to Canova’s practice: clay sketching, plaster casting, and marble carving and polishing. Hundreds of hours of footage were shaped into concise films, with every sound recreated as foley to create an intimate, close-looking gallery experience.
