Canova: Sketching in Clay was flagship exhibition from the Art Institute of Chicago, and featured original videos showcasing Italian sculptor Antonio Canova’s process.
The three videos demonstrated how the 18th-Century sculptor Antonio Canova created his works, by documenting sculptor Fred X Brownstein’s recreation of a marble sculpture using Canova’s techniques: sketching in clay, casting in plaster, and carving and polishing in marble - known to be Canova’s specialty. This process was filmed over 5 months, with hundreds of hours of footage edited into concise videos and all audio recreated as foley in post production for an intimate viewing experience.
